Wedding Dress Reincarnation, Brides Against Breast Cancer

I am not sentimental. Not at all. So before our wedding even took place I knew that my dress would not spend the rest of its life in the closet. My searching for a second life for that hunk of fabric lead me to the Making Memories‘ site; Making Memories’ mission is to make a difference in the lives of men and women suffering from metastatic breast cancer. In order to do all that they do, Making Memories has numerous fundraisers including Brides Against Breast Cancer.

Donating is simple; just head over to their site, download the information sheet, fill it out, and mail it with your dress. To keep the hassle down, I (and by I, I mean my sister… thank you again) just took my dress over to the UPS store and they did the packing for me. You do have to pay for shipping and Making Memories asks that you include a $40 gift to cover warehouse processing and gown prep (optional, but desired if possible). Total it ran me around $100, but all that is tax-deductible (including shipping). It would have probably cost a good bit more to get it dry-cleaned and “ready for the closet” so I was fine with the cost to ship and donate it. Via Making Memories my dress will head out on the Brides Against Breast Cancer Nationwide Tour of Gowns; not only will my dress be given a second life by a bride-to-be, but it will also help fulfill the dreams and wishes of someone suffering from metastatic breast cancer.

For anyone buying a dress or has a used dress, I would definitely recommend this organization. The happy feeling you will get from donating is way better than the guilty feeling you get 20 years later when you pull that dress out of the closet and think about how skinny you were on your wedding day.
